It would be a good idea to run Disk Defragmenter at regular intervals, maybe at least once a month. One of the benefits of doing so will be to increase the speed at which your computer accesses the data thus making it perform better. Other times when to run a Disk defragmenter on your computer would be when the disk is beginning to run out of space or when there are lots of files, when you install new programs. Below I shall walk you through how to use Disk Defragmenter in Windows 7.

  1. Click Start from your Desktop that click All programs, click Accessories, click System Tools, then click on Disk Defragmenter to run the program.
  2. In the Disk Defragmenter dialog box, click the drives that you would like to defragment, and then click on the Analyze button. To select multiple drives hold down Ctr and click the drives you want selected. After the disk has been analyzed, a dialog box will appear to let you know whether you should defragment the analyzed drive.
  3. You might want to always analyze your chosen drive to get an estimate of how long the defragmentation process will take before defragmenting it.

  4. Click the Defragment disk button to defragment the selected drive or drives. You can monitor the progress of the Defragmantation in the Current status area. After the defragmentation has been completed, The Disk Defragmenter will display the results.
  5. You can click on View Report to display detailed information about the defragmented disk or partition.
  6. Click on Close, when you have finished analysing the results.
  7. You can also schedule the Disk Defragmenter to run automatically. Under Schedule, it should read Scheduled defragmentation is turned on if it is already setup to run automatically, then it should display the time of day and frequency of defragmentation. If you would like to turn off automatic defragmentation or to turn it off if it’s currently turned off or to change the time or frequency, click the Configure schedule, then change the settings, and then click OK when you’re done.
  8. Close the Disk Defragmenter utility when you’re done by clicking on the Close button.

And that’s how to use the Disk Defragmenter in windows 7.
