I thought I write a little article about probably the most talked about and shocking phenomenon which has been around long back during the ages of our very first ancestors. The phenomenon has become so popular that it’s dominating the World Wide Web and other forms of communications now that the associated date is approaching nearer and nearer.

Apparently in the year 2012 Earth and its inhabitants will undergo cataclysmic or transformative (spiritual) events (or both) which will dramatically transform the Earth as we know it or mark its destruction. The so-called 2012 phenomenon has caused a lot of speculation among modern scientists and spiritual groups, most of which are based from interpretations of assorted legends, scriptures, numerological constructions, prophecies (such as that described by John in the famous book, the bible, in revelation, or from the famous characters such as Merlin), global warming  and alleged channeling from extraterrestrials. Below I shall list some of these predicted events. You can at any particular time skip through each paragraph/header because I have a feeling this will turn out to be a long article.

The Mesoamerican Mayan Calendar (Long count).

The long count Mayan Calendar has to be the most convincing and influential hypothesis for the 2012 phenomenon. The long count is one of three Mayan most important and used calendars. It’s a continuous record of days that start over every 5000 years or so. The current Long Count began in 3114 BC and is due to terminate on the Mayan date 13.0.0.0.0 which is equivalent to either December 21 or December 23, 2012. This Great cycle termination has caused lots of arguments to whether a global event will occur in the year 2012. The early Mayanist and astronomer Maud Worcester Makemson had written in 1957 that “the completion of a Great Period of 13 baktuns would have been of the utmost significance to the Maya”. The anthropologist Munro S. Edmonson added that “there appears to be a strong likelihood that the eral calendar, like the year calendar, was motivated by a long-range astronomical predictions, one that made a correct solstricial forecast 2,367 years into the future in 335 B.C.” In 1966, Michael D. Coe more ambitiously claimed in that “there is suggestion that an Armageddon would overtake the degenerate peoples of the world and all creation on the final day of the thirteenth baktun. Thus our present universe would be annihilated on December 23, 2012, when the Great Cycle of the Long Count reaches completion.“ The concept of the Long Count Calendar is simple and relatively similar to modern calendars but quite complex and long of course. The Long Count calendar kept time roughly in units of 20, I’ll keep it simple below;

So the basic unit is the kin (day) which is the last component moving from right towards left in a Mayan date for instance 12.18.2.6 (Long Count date) This sequence can be related to our modern interpretation and organizing of time, for instance a day, a week, month, year etc.

Unial……………1 unial = 20 kin [20 days]

Tun……………..1 tun = 18 unial  [18x20 = 360 days approx. 1 year]

Katun………….1 katun = 20 tun [360x20 = 7,200 days approx. 20 years]

Baktun………..1 baktun = 20 katun [7,200x20 = 144,000 days approx. 394 years]

Each cycle would last around 5000 years (13 baktun) which will mark the end of an era and another to follow, resetting the date back to 0.0.0.0.0.

The second calendar  known as the Haab, or vague year. It consists of 18 months, each of 20 days with an addition of a five-day month (a period of apprehension and bad luck named Uayeb) which gives 365 days an approximation of a year. The Haab calendar’s primary purpose was to keep track of the seasons. The other calendar is the scared calendar 206+35 known as the Tzolkin. Tzolkin combines the numbers 1 through 13 with a sequence of 20 day-names. It works in a similar manner to our named days of the week, and their date within each month. So for instance 5-Chikchan (like our Sunday the 5th) followed by 6kimi (as do we Monday the 6th). Both calendars have nothing to do with any of the 2012 predictions. “The Tzolkin and the Haab ran concurrently, like intermeshed cog-wheels, and to return to any given date, 52 years, or 18,980, would elapse (because both 365 x 52 and  260 x 73 = 18,980). In other words, the Tzolkin would make 73 revolutions and the Haab 52, so that every 52 calendar years of 365 days on would return to the same date. A complete date in this cycle might be, for example, 2 1k being the position of the day in the Tzolkin,0 Pop the position in the Haab). Fifty-two years would pass before another 2 1k 0 Pop date returned.” It was expected that the world would end at the completion of a 52-year cycle. At this time, all fires were extinguished, pregnant women were locked up lest they be turned into wild animals, children were pinched to keep them awake so that they would not turn into mice, and all pottery was broken in preparation for the end of the world. In the event the gods decided to grant man another 52 years of life on earth, a night time ceremony was held in which the populace followed the priests through the darkness over a causeway to the top of an old extinct volcano that rises abruptly from the floor of the basin of Mexico, known today as the Hill of the Star, the hill above Ixtapalapa. There, with all eyes on the stars, they awaited the passage of the Pleiades across the center of the heavens, which would announce the continuation of the world for another 52 years. When the precise moment came, a victim was quickly sacrificed by making a single gash in his chest and extracting the still palpitating heart. In the gory cavity the priests, with a fire drill, kindled a new flame that was quickly carried by torches across the lake to the temple in Tenochtitlan, and from there to all temples and villages around the lake. This was known as the New Fire Ceremony among the Mexican, and in some way this same completion and renewal of each 52-year cycle was recognized by all Mesoamericans.

So a typical Mayan date would look like this: 12.18.16.2.6, 3 Cimi 4 Zotz. 4 Zotz is the Haab date, 3 Cimi the Tzolkin date while 12.18.16.2.6 the Long Count date. All Mayan calendars were derived from those of their predecessors, the Olmec, whose culture dates back at least 3,000 years. Without the complex technology that evolved the following centuries that came, the early Central American locals amazingly managed to calculate a solar year to 365.2420 days which was more accurate than the Europeans. It is not known if the Olmecs created any of the Mayan calendars, or if they received it from an even earlier civilization.

The Maya civilization inhabited a region in southern Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Belize & western Honduras. They’re population expanded between the third and tenth centuries AD. They’ve ever since been very famous for their intelligence especially in mathematics and astronomy and their great obsession in time. Time was of such importance in their civilization that children were even named after the date on which they were born on.

A global pandemic

A geological event such as massive flood basalt, volcanism, or the eruption of a super volcano is another predicted event that would have an large effect on Earth. An instance is the Yellowstone Caldera which has been erupting for more than 142 times in the past 17 million years. And another famous one is the Toba Eruption which occurred in Indonesia about 71,500 years ago. Such an event is thought to have reduced the human population on a very large scale.

A gamma ray burst or other devastating blast of cosmic radiation is another. One especially unpredictable source is a hypernova. This takes place when a star explodes and then collapses, sending vast amounts of radiation sweeping across wide light years of space.

Galactic alignment

The idea of the Galactic alignment became more popular from Frank Waters’ book which was inspired from Major Jenkins’ speculation in the mid-1980s, noting the alignment of the December solstice sun with the Galactic equator due to the precession of the equinoxes. correspondence of the December 21 date with the solstice in 2012. This date was in line with an idea he terms the Galactic Alignment.

Geomagnetic reversal

Another event which could have a great effect on Earth or bring a ‘Doom’s day’ upon it is a geomagnetic reversal also known as a pollar shift. A geomagnetic reversal/pollar shift can be triggered by a massive Solar flare which can contain energy the equivalent of 100 billion atomic bombs. This idea was supported by the observations of the Earth’s magnetic field which is said to be weakening indicating an impending reversal of the north and south magnetic poles. Scientists today believe that Earth is overdue for this geomagnetic reversal. The last geomagnetic reversal occurred 780, 000 years ago, however some critics believe geomagnetic reversals take up to 5, 0000 years to complete and do not start on any particular date. NASA expects a strong solar maximum sometime between 2010 and 2012, but there is no scientific evidence connecting a solar maximum to a geomagnetic reversal.  A way to note a solar maximum would be from its effects on satellite and cellular communications.

Planet Nibiru

At least on the date of this particular event we won’t need telescopes to observe a far away planet because this one is going to come to us. It has been claimed that a planet known as Nibiru will collide with or pass by planet Earth in the same year. Astronomers calculate that Nibiru will be so close to Earth that it would be visible to anyone looking up at the night sky.

Biblical theories

The Bible’s Book of Revelation which was written over 1900 years ago paints a very dramatic picture of the end of the world. The Book notes nothing about 2012 or any similar date, it promised that the events will happen “very soon”.

New Ages theories

Personally I think this predication is not accurate A ‘consciousness shift’?! The so called New Agers believe that the ending of this cycle will correspond to a world “consciousness shift”. This is not exactly a dooms day or end of the world alarm. There has been many written books connecting to the same prediction. The coming Sixth Age of Consciousness, The transformative vision by Jose Arguelles and The Mayan Factor (1987) The author and metal worker Semir Osmanagic also known for promoting the Bosnian pyramids, referred to 2012 in the conclusion of his book The World of the Maya. He suggests that “Advancement of DNA may raise us to a higher level” he adds that “When the heaven open and cosmic energy is allowed to flow throughout our tiny planet, will we be raised to a higher level by the vibrations”. Strange isn’t it?

Man-made activity

This is a famous one and a more convincing idea in the modern world today since the evidence is said to be visible. Man-made activity might include a nuclear chemical, or biological war, a cybernetic revolt, Out of control nanotechnology creating a grey goo inundation, severe anthropogenic global warming, The creation of a black hole close or on Earth; for instance particle collisions at the Hadron collider.

Sure there have been many ‘End of the world’ or Doom’s day predications before, but this date 21 Dec 2012? What do you think about this phenomenon?
