Angels in America

Angels in America

I purchased the DVD from the market. The seller recommended it to me. Actually when I read the title I got a completely different picture about the film content and I was excited how this would turn out. It’s a very long film; the running time is approximately 337 minutes (around 6 hours). I could have been reluctant to purchase this film had I realised there was a gay theme, because let’s face it there has never been great gay film unless I missed it. So I was caught by surprise and that’s what great films are all about. Isn’t it? The film is not exactly centred around a gay theme but does point it out.

Angels in America film is the winner of 5 golden globe awards directed by Mike Nichols, apparently the adaptation of Tony Kushner’s “extraordinary” 6-hour epic play. The film captures the 1980’s America presenting a glimpse into the lives of three groups; homosexual Louis and Prior, disgruntles husband and wife Joe and Harper and the notorious Roy Cohn. The film features a great list of well assembled cast that can only result in great performances including Meryl Streep, Al Pacino, Patrick Wilson and Mary Louise Parker. It’s composition of humor, grief, tragedy, racism, sexism, religion, love, betrayal, contrasting fantasy from reality and ultimately, the triumph of the human spirit over desperation and resignation. Exploring politics, 1980′s Jewish-American assimilation and HIV inflict on a gay community.

The most outstanding story follows the AIDS patient Prior Walter who begins to experience hallucinations induced by his medicine and condition. Probably his appearances are ever very dramatic stimulating only sympathy and humour. His ancestors rise from the dead to speak to him, receiving an untimely angel guest who accepts no invitation and prefers to crash through roofs to make her entrance.

This is definitely one of the most jaw-dropping, mind capturing and intellectually stimulating films that I have ever watched. The film exceeded my expectations by miles. You must watch this and add to your collection! Highly recommended.

One Response so far.

  1. I have not ever heard of this movie, not that surprising i guess. I am a huge fan of meryl streep but certainly not of gays.. i do respect a good film and it sounds like a movie that i would not regret watching. The hardest thing is going to be convincing myself to actually watch it.. six hours and includes a gay theme? If it weren’t for your review, i would normally say heck no and never consider it.. i am truly torn right now.
